The Montañerito Paisa: An Endemic Treasure of Antioquia, Colombia
Imagine a unique bird, the Montañerito Paisa, which resides exclusively in the northern highlands of Antioquia, Colombia. This species is a specialist in low shrub habitats, where fruit-producing plants such as the mortiño and mountain grapes abound. More than just a resident of the region, the Montañerito Paisa and its habitat play a crucial role in supporting the northern Antioquia watershed and supplying vital rivers for drinking water, energy generation, and food production.
The iCMP: A Solum Commitment to Conservation
We are proud to present the Montañerito Paisa Conservation Initiative (iCMP), a project that seeks to protect the habitat of the Montañerito Paisa (Atlapetes blancae) to preserve the essential natural infrastructure for regulating water resources in the northern highlands of Antioquia. This initiative is not only an act of environmental responsibility but also a commitment to sustainability and biodiversity preservation.
Key Results of the iCMP
So far, the iCMP has achieved significant milestones:
• Protected Areas: Conservation agreements and private nature reserves have been established, covering a total of 1880 hectares.
• Montañerito Paisa Natural Reserve: 356 hectares have been permanently protected in the Montañerito Paisa Natural Reserve.
• Identified Individuals: Thanks to the 3rd Montañerito Paisa Searchathon, approximately 108 Montañerito Paisa individuals were identified, providing valuable data for conservation.
• Conservation Agreements Signed: Within the framework of the iCMP, 6 conservation agreements have been signed, marking another step towards the sustainable protection of the Montañerito Paisa.
Commitment to the Mortiño and Habitat Expansion
At Solum, we take our commitment a step further. We are exploring the possibility of including the mortiño, an essential plant for the Montañerito Paisa, in our recipes. By doing so, we aim to encourage the cultivation of this fruit, thus expanding the natural habitat of the Montañerito Paisa and contributing to its conservation in a more direct and sustainable way.
