In the world of coffee, 80% of the coffee fruit is wasted and generates a negative carbon footprint. At solum, we change this and generate new income for coffee growers.

FAQ

Our choice of the name 'Solum' for our brand of natural and sustainable foods is based on its scientific meaning. In Latin, 'solum' translates to soil, representing the fertile layer where life begins and is sustained. This term embodies our commitment to the organic growth of food, emphasizing the importance of healthy, nutrient-rich soil in cultivating sustainable and healthy products.

The coffee cherry is a nutritional gem thanks to its abundance of antioxidants and polyphenols. These compounds act as powerful cellular protectors, helping to combat oxidative stress and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. The present polyphenols, such as phenolic acids and flavonoids, not only contribute to cardiovascular health but also possess anti-inflammatory properties. Incorporating coffee cherry into the diet can significantly contribute to the intake of these beneficial compounds, promoting overall optimal health.

Our unique value proposition sets us apart on various fronts from competitors. Primarily, as a Colombian company founded by individuals who have been working in the specialty coffee sector for over 10 years, we have a very direct and close working relationship with our suppliers. Technical assistance, advance payments, provision of machinery, services, and, above all, knowledge sharing enable us to manage a highly streamlined and direct supply chain that benefits all collaborators. On the product quality side, we consider ourselves experts, almost scholars of the coffee cherry. With over a decade of experience, we have an in-depth understanding of the product and know exactly how to process it to offer the most authentic and natural flavor possible.

Our coffee cherry-based beverages occupy an innovative category, merging the characteristics of coffee, tea, sodas, and energy drinks. This emerging segment holds immense potential as it caters to the growing demand for healthy and sustainable alternatives in the beverage industry. With consumers becoming increasingly health-conscious and environmentally aware, coffee cherry-based beverages offer a unique experience, filled with natural flavors and nutritional benefits. Furthermore, their versatility in preparation, whether hot or cold, enhances their appeal, catering to various preferences. This potential is reflected in the growing consumer interest and willingness to explore options that embody innovation and commitment to a conscious and balanced lifestyle.

We use the finest available raw material: high-quality coffee cherries from specialty coffees in Colombia, a country renowned for producing the world's best Arabica coffee. We consistently seek the best raw materials in the Colombian coffee market and collaborate closely with our producers to enhance product quality while promoting sustainable cultivation and soil reintegration to prevent erosion.

Products labeled as 'upcycling' are crafted from raw materials that previously had no food-related function (in our case). Coffee cherry, which previously caused challenges on coffee farms and, at best, was composted, now provides additional income of 10-20% to coffee growers. This not only reduces the negative carbon footprint but also addresses environmental issues by being processed appropriately on the farms with which we collaborate.

I'm truly excited about Solum's potential, both in the quality and the deliciousness of the products they've produced so far, but perhaps even more so for the opportunity their products offer to transform the viability and livelihoods of coffee producers by commercializing one of the environmental impacts of coffee cultivation. I can't wait to see where the team takes this!

Jordan Forester

Co-fundador Courial y Climate Tech Start-up advisor.

I’m grateful I met Carl in Medellin where I learned of Solum’s contrarian approach to decarbonizing the F&B sector in Colombia, South America and beyond: massive impact via Co2e cuts while improving lives (and yields) for front-line communities and farmers.

Their superpower: a team that knows the LatAm markets and tech that converts coffee waste to value.

The result? An innovative circular economy solution that uplifts the agronomy sector and puts new piles of cash directly in coffee growers’ pockets.

I was inspired by Solum’s vision, growing knowledge of local and international markets, and supply chain insights, with the potential for huge scale.

First thoughts on taste? Shocking and phenomenally refreshing bursts of fruity flavors that I never would have expected from the coffee plant.

Yes, I’m currently going through withdrawals, and am Google-flight’ing return trips to Colombia, pronto.

Solum will win because its product is just plain better, healthier, cooler, and tastier than existing beverages, but it also has potential for massive decarbonization impact, with byproducts including returns for local communities and economies of scale.

If there’s any team to bring this sustainable solution to market and iterate on a potentially limitless rainbow of flavors with a depth mirroring Colombia’s bio-diversity, it’s Carlos and his crew.

Note to Fridge: Move over La Croix and make room for Solum!
